Getting Ready For A Fulfilled Marriage– Pastor Faith Abiola Oyedepo
As part of the preparations for a wedding ceremony, it is important you have a counsellor to groom you through the process of marriage. However, after the exchange of vows on the altar and every other celebration that comes with it, you are left to figure out every other thing by yourself. At that point, you are faced with the reality of putting into practice all you must have learnt before this time. The good news is: your marriage will be successful, fulfilling and fruitful in all areas if you will take heed to the instructions below.
The Word of God
The marriage union was created by God’s Word and can only be sustained and upheld by it. God’s Word is the foundation on which a fulfilling marital life can be built. A true revelation of scriptures concerning marriage is what guarantees a “heaven on earth” experience. The Bible says: …and upholding all things by the word of his power…. (Hebrews 1:3).
Some people believe that laying on of hands by an anointed man of God and prayers are what make a successful marriage. While there is nothing wrong with that, you must also understand that adequate preparation and understanding of God’s Word concerning the marriage institution is what guarantees your success in it. If you do not pay attention to the Word of God as it relates to marriage and living, there is no prayer anyone can pray that will give you the desired result.
God’s Word is the foundation for a lasting marriage. The Bible says: If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? (Psalm 11:3). When you take God’s Word as a guide to every aspect of your marriage, it moulds your home into what God intends it to be. God’s Word reveals the areas you need changes and guides your relationship with your spouse.
The truth is: If you can subscribe to God’s Word, it is able to give you a beautiful and enviable marriage. How do you subscribe to God’s Word, you may ask? You do this by consciously searching through the scriptures for keys to marital bliss with the help of the Holy Spirit.
My husband, Dr. David Oyedepo, said before we got married, he searched the Scripture thoroughly for keys to a hitch-free marriage. He had seen so many troubled marriages and did not want that. However, he knew that since God was the Author of marriage; then, He must have the guidelines to it. As you know, God’s guidelines to every aspect of our lives are in the Word. Hence, he went in search of these keys from God’s Word and got them. Today, we celebrate over three decades of sweet and stress-free marriage. You can also experience this and much more if you will give in to God’s Word and obey every instruction in it concerning marriage.
Acquire Knowledge
The major reason for crises in marriages today is because husbands and wives do not fully understand their God-given responsibilities in the marriage set up. If you do not know your marital duties, how will you fulfil your obligations? The Bible says: Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the Weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered (1 Peter 3:7).
The main emphasis here is the phrase, “Dwell with them according to knowledge”. The word “dwell” is translated from the Greek word, “Sunoikeo”, which is used to denote domestic association. This association is to be done according to knowledge. For any marriage to experience any degree of success, the knowledge of the nature and duties of every member of the family is inevitable. The Oxford dictionary defines knowledge as “awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a person”. Dictionary.com defines it as, “The state or fact of knowing; familiarity, awareness, or understanding gained through experience or study; specific information about something”.
Therefore, when the Bible, enjoins us to dwell according to knowledge, it means there are certain facts that one must lay hold on in order to be fulfilled in marriage. There will be crises when we have little or no knowledge of spouse or marital duties and this can make marriage unfulfilling. The Bible says: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge… (Hosea 4:6).
Thus, to enjoy family success, the place of knowledge cannot be over emphasized. The Word of God enumerates the benefits of knowledge; it says: By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures (Proverbs 24:3-4 NIV). Then, if your marriage must be filled with rare and beautiful treasures of peace, love, joy, satisfaction, sunshine, fulfilment, etc., knowledge is the key.
Hence, before you go into marriage, study God’s Word and anointed books by proven authors with fulfilling testimonies in their marriages to gain knowledge on how to build your home. Your marriage shall be a blessing in Jesus’ name!
